    The Use of Deep Learning in Verifying the Functioning of LEDs

    This article aims to bring an alternative to carrying out manual tests of devices mounted on a production line. One of the tests done by the operator is to find out if the LEDs are present on the device being turned on and working correctly. Image processing techniques were applied in the elaboration of the dataset and the use of Convolutional Neural Networks for the classification of the colors presented by the LEDs and the recognition of their operation. An accuracy of 99.25% was obtained with a low percentage of false positives and true negatives. There were no difficulties in porting the model built to a small computer

    Optical Pumping of TeH+: Implications for the Search for Varying mp/me

    Molecular overtone transitions provide optical frequency transitions sensitive to variation in the proton-to-electron mass ratio (μmp/me\mu\equiv m_p/m_e). However, robust molecular state preparation presents a challenge critical for achieving high precision. Here, we characterize infrared and optical-frequency broadband laser cooling schemes for TeH+^+, a species with multiple electronic transitions amenable to sustained laser control. Using rate equations to simulate laser cooling population dynamics, we estimate the fractional sensitivity to μ\mu attainable using TeH+^+. We find that laser cooling of TeH+^+ can lead to significant improvements on current μ\mu variation limits

    Histologic and Histomorphometric Analysis of Posterior Region of the Human Temporomandibular Disc

    Objective The aim of this study was to analyze histologic and histomorphometric features of the articular disc in groups with and without disc displacement. Study design A sample of 39 temporomandibular joints TMJs (31 case specimens, 8 control specimens) from 28 patients (mean age 31.2 years) were recruited for this study. The patients were considered to be affected and treated surgically with disc repositioning when presenting painful clinical signs of disc displacement after unsuccessful nonsurgical treatment for at least 6 months. Of the control patients, 4 presented condyle fracture which required opening to be reduced for treatment, and 4 displayed active condyle hyperplasia. The posterior region of the disc was removed and sent for histologic and histomorphometric analysis. Histologic (hematoxylin-eosin) and histomorphometric (picro-Sirius red) analyses were performed. Statistically significant differences between the analyzed groups were accessed through the chi-squared test (P ≤ .05). The Mann-Whitney U test was used to observe the differences between mean values when variables did not present normal distribution [Kolmogorov-Smirnov(a) test]. Results There were no significant differences between the groups in relation to the parameters studied by histologic and histomorphometric analysis (using or not using polarization). Conclusions To the limits of this study, there were no significant histologic and histomorphometric differences in the articular disc between groups with and without TMJ dysfunction

    Transcriptional regulatory networks controlling woolliness in peach in response to preharvest gibberellin application and cold storage

    BACKGROUND: Postharvest fruit conservation relies on low temperatures and manipulations of hormone metabolism to maintain sensory properties. Peaches are susceptible to chilling injuries, such as ‘woolliness’ that is caused by juice loss leading to a ‘wooly’ fruit texture. Application of gibberellic acid at the initial stages of pit hardening impairs woolliness incidence, however the mechanisms controlling the response remain unknown. We have employed genome wide transcriptional profiling to investigate the effects of gibberellic acid application and cold storage on harvested peaches. RESULTS: Approximately half of the investigated genes exhibited significant differential expression in response to the treatments. Cellular and developmental process gene ontologies were overrepresented among the differentially regulated genes, whereas sequences in cell death and immune response categories were underrepresented. Gene set enrichment demonstrated a predominant role of cold storage in repressing the transcription of genes associated to cell wall metabolism. In contrast, genes involved in hormone responses exhibited a more complex transcriptional response, indicating an extensive network of crosstalk between hormone signaling and low temperatures. Time course transcriptional analyses demonstrate the large contribution of gene expression regulation on the biochemical changes leading to woolliness in peach. CONCLUSION: Overall, our results provide insights on the mechanisms controlling the complex phenotypes associated to postharvest textural changes in peach and suggest that hormone mediated reprogramming previous to pit hardening affects the onset of chilling injuries.     Comparative study of the lipid profiles of oils from kernels of peanut, babassu, coconut, castor and grape by GC-FID and Raman spectroscopy

    The characterization of the lipid profiles of oils extracted from the kernel of seeds and nuts of peanut (Arachis hypogaea), babassu (Attalea speciosa), coconut (Cocos nucifera), castor (Ricinus communis) and grape (Vitis vinifera) was performed by using Raman spectroscopy and gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID). Chromatographic analyses showed that coconut and babassu oils are composed essentially by saturated fatty acids (SFA), whereas the others are composed mainly by unsaturated fatty acids (UFA). The comparison of commercial and homemade castor oils showed the former have a lower level of ricinoleic acid at ca. 58%. Spectroscopic analyses of three distinct castor oils showed their profiles could be differentiated by marker features ascribed to carbonyl modes which were correlated with storage time. The comparison between the Raman spectra of standard samples of fatty acids with the samples of oils allowed the assignment of the spectroscopic features and the characterization of marker bands for the degree of unsaturation.

    Capacidades de ti e desempenho da firma nas empresas brasileiras mais inovadoras no uso da TI

    O objetivo deste trabalho é identificar a (in) existência de associação direta entre capacidades de TI e desempenho no nível da firma. Para isso são utilizados dados secundários de 122 empresas mais inovadoras no uso da TI (67 delas são listadas na BM&FBOVESPA), publicadas em ranking de revista especializada. Os indicadores de desempenho da firma são extraídos das demonstrações contábeis, tanto no sítio da Bolsa quanto nos sítios corporativos, e confrontados com o escore de capacidades de TI da empresa no ranking – abrangendo um período de três anos (2009 a 2011). Os dados são analisados com o Teste não paramétrico de Mann-Whitney, tendo em vista a ausência de normalidade dos dados. Os resultados confirmam que altas capacidades de TI estão dissociadas de melhores medidas de desempenho da firma, sinalizando para investigações que identifiquem o valor da TI em níveis inferiores ao da firma, a exemplo de processos de negócios e capacidades organizacionais que fazem uso direto da TI. Limitação e oportunidades de pesquisa são apresentadas nas conclusões
